The graphical interface essentially works like a whiteboard and provides you with an excellent overview, so that you can create an ideally structured network rapidly and activate it at the touch of a button.

If your data center needs any adjustments later, you can also implement them and activate them immediately with just a few clicks of the mouse.

The best way to plan a structure is to take a large, blank whiteboard on which you can sketch, correct and improve the entire structure by hand using a pen, until you have a clear overview of the complete picture. With our competitors, you then need to laboriously transfer this structure into tables of virtual servers, tables of storages and link tables and then after each change, compile a new structure that you then need to transfer again.

Cloud InfrastructureAt ProfitBricks we offer you a “virtual whiteboard”, the Data Center Designer (DCD). This is one of ProfitBricks’ proprietary tools, which you can use to configure and manage your own virtual data center. However, the DCD can do considerably more than a whiteboard. You can use it to design your virtual data center with servers, storages, load balancers, firewalls and the respective networking. Once you are satisfied with the structure, you can bring the data center you have designed to life with a mouse click – without any complicated forms and tables.

As you would expect, you can freely define the number of Intel core pairs for a virtual server and modify them at any time. Intel core pairs are considerably more powerful than AMD Opteron cores because each core in the processor is still assigned a "hyper-thread", which the operating system treats like a second core. This is why we use the term "Intel core pairs." On average, these pairs are around twice as fast as AMD cores, although this can vary greatly depending on the application. If you want to find out which of the two architectures is better suited to your application, we recommend carrying out a test, which – thanks to our Core Technology Choice function – is now easier than ever before.

Does this sound familiar? Sometimes the data center’s resources are calculated too tightly, and sometimes too generously. It’s never planned precisely. Well, we’ve got good news – from now on, there’ll be no more planning errors. Never again.

Or during operation – traffic increases. Your servers start slowing down. Your customers start to complain. But upgrading the servers now will put you in a predicament, because you will need to at least shut them down temporarily and then restart them again. In the meantime, a large backlog will accumulate, which can even bring the upgraded servers to their knees after restart.

Software Defined Networking

Conventional network technology seems old-fashioned in comparison. Software Defined Networking with InfiniBand.

A ProfitBricks virtual data center basically works in the same way as a real data center. Just a bit better, in fact, up to ten times faster than with conventional network technology. That’s because, instead of Ethernet, we use the InfiniBand network technology from high-performance computing.

The extensive freedom of the network configuration at ProfitBricks is based on Software Defined Networking (SDN). This enables you to set up the precise network that you need, without having to make the slightest compromise. Our SDN allows you to freely network all components to completely match your requirements.

For example, is it important for you to isolate servers to achieve a decisive advantage in terms of speed and security? No problem.

Plus – all components in your virtual data center at ProfitBricks are redundantly connected on a continuous basis, which ensures maximum failsafe performance.

Does this sound familiar? One of the main problems when using virtual (or dedicated servers) at older generation hosting companies or other IaaS providers is that you have no freedom to network the virtual servers with each other. In the worst case, all virtual servers are directly connected to the Internet.

Sometimes, limited networking options that enable load balancing are offered. However, genuine isolation of the customer network in a virtual data center, as at ProfitBricks, is rare. 

Software Defined Networking (SDN) à la ProfitBricks

We have no restrictions at all regarding the structure of your network. The technology on which this is based is known as Software Defined Networking (SDN). In this respect, ProfitBricks is one step ahead of the competition.

Simply put, first generation SDN splits up the network into separate levels for network data analysis and control (control plane) and for network data transport (data plane). This enables the analysis and control levels to be completely virtualized. Physical network access is not required. The control level usually addresses the individual hardware components via an Application Programming Interface (API). The relocation of the controls to the software level opens up a wide range of automation potential, for configuration changes or update rollouts, for example.

ProfitBricks, on the other hand, does not virtualize only the control level, but the complete network. Thus we achieve a second generation SDN solution, which is considerably superior to all others in terms of functional scope and speed.

ProfitBricks is continuously developing its SDN technology in order to use its entire potential. Our technology is based on the open source Linux kernel with a direct interface to the Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM). This enables maximum freedom when adjusting to various scenarios.

Our control software virtualizes all classical networks such as firewalls, load balancers and switches. Real hardware is no longer required.

The software can include, configure and control various virtual network hardware components via integrated drivers. With our solution, traffic can thus also be connected and not just separated.

For their internal networking, the ProfitBricks data centers use InfiniBand instead of the Ethernet protocol and, together with our proprietary development transmission standard, thus achieve speeds that make the advantages of virtualized network control (high MTU, multiple redundancy) clearly perceptible.

With a current transmission speed of 80 Gbit/s, InfiniBand is eight times as fast as the current fastest Ethernet with 10 Gbit/s. In our competitors’ data centers, however, only 0.1 Gbit/s Ethernet is typically used. In addition to higher speed, InfiniBand is also considerably more efficient, as network collisions cannot occur, even with high loads – the typical problem of Ethernet technology. We use InfiniBand technology, which is considerably faster and more efficient, exclusively.

You will notice the high level of efficiency of our infrastructure from our far superior access speed to network storage and in the connection speed between the individual virtual servers, for example, the web server to application servers to database servers.

Background Information on InfiniBand

InfiniBand is a switch-based point-to-point connection architecture. Each individual link is based on a four-core bi-directional connection and supports various communication services and prioritizes virtual channels. Services such as the error message or the “link failover” are taken over by a “subnet manager” to ensure a stable connection network.

The 4X QDR InfiniBand technology used by ProfitBricks supports signal rates from up to 40 Gbit/s and data transmission rates from up to 32 Gbit/s. The “switch chips” have a very low latency of 100-200ns (MPI latency ~ 1µs).

Cloud Storage

Loss of data is a nightmare for any company, not just specifically in the cloud. That’s why the security of your data has top priority at ProfitBricks. We don’t make any compromises. For this purpose, each storage unit in our storage system consists of two synchronized sub-units, which are always located in two geographically separate fire compartments. Within each sub-unit, the data is then held on a mirrored basis.

At the same time, a high transmission speed needs to be ensured. This is where you can totally rely on ProfitBricks – your data is backed up on a doubly redundant basis and thus fourfold, and is highly available at all times through the redundant InfiniBand networking.

Storage (hard drive space) is the basis of any Internet service. ProfitBricks has thus invested a large amount of time in developing a new generation of storage systems for cloud storage. As in networking, there are two main requirements for storage – security and speed.

Each storage unit at ProfitBricks is based on two sub-units that are always located in different fire zones of the respective data center. Both sub-units work synchronously and each contains the complete data stock. Each sub-unit then holds the data redundantly within the unit. In addition, each sub-unit has a set of SSD hard drives (Solid State Drive – hard drives without mechanics on a RAM basis) as a cache, in order to optimize the speed of the unit.

For you, this means double redundant storage of your data and (in combination with our meshed InfiniBand networking) speeds that are considerably higher than with a conventional Network Attached Storage (NAS).

The best way to plan and architect Internet environments is to use a large, blank whiteboard to outline, correct and improve the complete infrastructure design by hand using a pen. The relationships between the components are complex and the easiest way to keep them all straight is to represent them visually.

First generation cloud hosting IaaS providers require you to convert these drawings into tables of text meant to indicate virtual servers, storage and how they interact with one another - a cumbersome and error prone process. Plus, with each subsequent change you have to pick the right row in the table and setup network connections, IPs and more.

Which cloud computing provider and which offer are really best suited to me? That’s not quite so easy to establish – some providers’ advertising campaigns are based on their prices and discount models, while others’ are based on performance.

Comparing prices and performance on paper is simply impossible, because there are no standardized procedures. This is not due to a lack of good faith, but to the many variables that need to be taken into consideration. One core, for example, is not equal to another core and one CPU is not the same as another. One main difference in practice is also whether – as at ProfitBricksa core is available exclusively for you or whether you need to share it with other customers of the provider. To say nothing of the different intrinsic system performance in the network technologies used.

No meaningful price comparison without benchmarks. Only the real performance rendered and the calculated price of a virtual infrastructure can be put into perspective. We are happy to be compared with other IaaS providers. In our experience, ProfitBricks is always right at the forefront. Test us.

Example: For the use of a virtual CPU, Provider A charges 5 cents per minute. For basically the same CPU, however, Provider B charges 10 cents. In the test, you discover that your application runs three times faster on Provider B’s server. And on Provider A’s server, the speed fluctuates very heavily, with downward spikes of up to 70%. Ultimately, you thus pay 15 cents per minute for the fluctuating performance with Provider A.

The best support from an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provider is the one that you don’t need at all. And we’re well aware of that. But if you do have a problem, what would your ideal support be like? Of course, the last thing you will want is to struggle with a long-winded phone menu, which then connects you with an operative whose first question is whether you have restarted the server.

We imagine that your ideal support would look something like this – you call us and are immediately connected with a competent contact person. During normal working times and provided they are available, this will always be the same support engineer. And when we say “engineer” that’s exactly what we mean. Our support staff are all highly qualified system administrators with long-term experience. Our support team does not have a “1st Level” or “agents”, who ask you questions according to a pre-prepared script. You can discuss your problem on the same level with our support engineers. You can be certain that your engineer will take the trouble to solve your problem as responsibly as if he/she were employed by you.

We also think that we should also ensure that enough support engineers are available to be able to provide prompt, first-class support to our customers. Now it can happen to any good company now and again that the size of the support team cannot keep up with the new customer business. Every company thus needs to decide whether it will take into consideration that the support might suffer as a result of a large number of new customers until the support team can keep up with the customer figures again, or whether it will not accept any new customers until it acquires new support capacities.

We’ve therefore decided to give priority to regular customers in the event of limited support capacities and not to accept new customers. That’s why we’ve placed a status indicator on our home page, which specifies when we are unable to accept new customers in critical cases. However, our SysAdmin support also makes another important decision – our support engineers have daily contact with you, our customers. They are more informed than anyone else at ProfitBricks about your problems and requirements.
